Sustainable Agriculture

What is Organic?

Organic is about health management and disease prevention – with no synthetic chemicals. Organic means farming in such a way which cares for the environment, without relying upon synthetic chemicals and other unnatural interventionist approaches. Hence, organic food comes from organic farms utilizing the best of traditional agriculture and modern techniques, using nature and natural processes. Rather than using synthetic pesticides to kill pests, farmers prevent pests by planting a diverse range of crops, by rotating crops, using natural biological and environmentally friendly inputs, and conserving natural ecosystems.

Organic farming and food production needs real commitment and attention to detail, and is backed up by rigorous, independent inspection and certification.

Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable Agriculture attempts to address competing social, economic, and environmental issues simultaneously; e.g., produce enough nutritious food to support current and future population while generating profit to the producers and avoiding soil nutrient depletion and environmental contamination. As the concept of sustainable agriculture implies, all these issues must be addressed simultaneously for an agricultural system to maintain a continuous support for current and future generation without interruption. If we neglect one of these issues, the system may run the risk of not being sustainable.

Sustainable agriculture and organic farming more or less synonyms which follows the concept of organic farming and use of organic input for crop cultivation. In sustainable agriculture farmers should generate the inputs needed for crop cultivation in the farm itself and he should less dependent on external inputs.
